The biomass vertical of the Centre for Renewable energy is dedicated to technologies and processes involving biomass waste. The primarily organic waste from vegetation, kitchens and from other human use can be converted to energy through cogeneration, or into fuels such hydrogen, producer gas or biogas via thermochemical means. A 150 kg biodigester has been installed in the Nila campus mess for processing kitchen waste and for producing biogas. The resultant sludge could also be used as a natural fertilizer. A biomass pyrolyser for catalytic production of hydrogen and pyrolysis oil has also been installed. It also possesses a box furnace for catalyst synthesis. A lab-scale downdraft gasifier has been developed by UG students for producer gas synthesis where currently studies are being conducted on pelletised biomass.
