Welcome to Centre of Renewable Energy IIT Palakkad
At IIT Palakkad, solar energy utilization is considered as an important technological development keeping in mind the need to promote sustainable technologies. Both solar photovoltaic and solar thermal conversion technologies are given due consideration. Plans are afoot to install roof-top solar PV panels to provide an average power of about 1.2 MW, to meet the campus power needs during day time. Most of the academic and residential buildings in the IIT Palakkad campus will incorporate roof-top solar panels and the power thus developed will be integrated into the campus- wide power grid. It is also envisaged to carry out research on solar thermal conversion by concentrating solar radiation using an array of mirrors. A heat transfer fluid (water/heating oil) will be heated to high temperatures by concentrated solar energy. It is possible to utilize the thermal energy thus collected for various applications such as solar refrigeration, sea-water desalination and power production.

Solar Energy Utilization
By concentrating solar radiation with an array of mirrors, water or any other flowing liquid can be heated. It is possible to produce high temperature steam and use it for various applications such as sea-water desalination, power production bya steam turbine and for producing refrigeration effect.
